18th Annual Golf Tournament

HOT was an understatement! That’s what we had for the weather this year, 100 degrees in the shade and no breeze. But the Academy Men held out in great style and suffered the heat. As you know we generally have rain. This year we prayed for a shower to cool things off, but to no avail. 140 golfers were in attendance with 110 of them being Academy Alumni and their sons. The other 20 people are some of our die hard friends from St. Mary’s and other high schools.

Many of our Alumni and friends sponsored holes and were major sponsors of the Tourney. Check the Sponsor section to see who our sponsors are and if you are in need of their particular fields or services please try to patronize these friends and Alumni.

Paulie and the barbeque crew did another yeoman’s job on the bratwurst for lunch and the Prairies of Cahokia staff did a great job on the fried chicken for dinner. The beer was cold and the newest addition to the tourney the margarita bar was a really big hit. A cold margarita on a hot day is always refreshing.

Our hostesses Roxie and Kim from 6th & Lucas downtown and Adria from Bruno’s did a great job keeping everyone supplied with liquid refreshments. Not to mention that they really looked great in the Alumni uniforms. They were a great addition to the event. We’ve had great hostesses in the past, but these were by far the best.

This year’s “A” Flight Champions won in a score card playoff was captained by Jim Dressler ’72 with a score of 59. The “A” Flight second place team of Rick Hastings ’73, Gino Frigo ’73, Chick Pfeil ’73 and Kevin Hastings also scored a 59. The “B” Flight Champions also determined by a score card playoff was the team of Jerry Goltschmann ’72, Jack Goltschmann ’66 and their sons with a score of 66. The “B” flight second place team of Dan Borkowski ’72, Bob Steiner ’66, Matt Sullivan and Scott Brown came in with a 66. Skins were taken by the Borkowski Team with a birdie on #7 and the Miceli Team with an eagle on #11. The longest drive was taken by Derek Stephens, nephew of Clint Moebes ’67. The closest to the pin was taken by Denny Ferguson ’73. The 50/50 hole on #17 was taken by Jim Dressler ’72.

We saw some people there we haven’t seen in a long time. Denny Vineyard ’72 was there. It was good to see Denny. He appears to be continuing to recover from his stroke and many of us enjoyed visiting with Denny throughout the evening. We also had in attendance Jack Galmiche ’66. Jack is the President of KETC Channel 9 here in St. Louis. It is the Public Television station here in St. Louis. Jack made his first golf tournament since we began and had such a great time that he will be back for more. Pete Stevener our typing teacher and John “the Old Dad” Dring made his 18th appearance at the tournament. John is a perennial and is very active in the Association.

We had many great raffle prizes that were beyond compare. The prizes were donated by many friends and Alumni and we wish to thank those people whose generosity is always appreciated. We wish again express our thanks to them.

We also want to take this opportunity to publicly thank Dennis Domachowski ’72 and Dennis Ferguson ’73 for providing all the beer for the tourney. Sorkis Webbe Jr. ’72 for providing the soda and Mark Bruno ’69 the margarita bar. Without their kind assistance we wouldn’t have been able to put on a quality event.

We would like to thank the Golf Committee for all their hard work in doing the planning, making the calls and just plain hard work getting the prizes and gift bags ready for the tourney. When you see those gentlemen please take time to thank them for their hard work. Without their work in planning and execution of the Tournament were wouldn’t be able to see as many of the Alumni as we do. We also wish to thank Fr. Terry Deffenbaugh OSA ’65 for coming down and helping with the event. Fr. Terry is a great friend and supporter of the Alumni and the tournament wouldn’t be the same without him. If you’re every in Olympia Fields, IL go to the Tolentine Center and look him up.

The 19th Annual Alumni Tournament will be held on Saturday June 19, 2010. The site is the Prairies of Cahokia. Mark your calendars now and make plans to attend. We will be posting photos of the tourney soon so check out the photo link and go to 2009 Golf Tournament to view them.

Golf Tournament Comment by Rick Hastings ‘73

I was talking to my brother Brian, and he told me a good MANA story from the tournament.

He went up to the two Mana sons and just in conversation said ” I know you guys aren’t old enough to have gone to Augie, what is your connection?”

One of them told him “I feel like I did” and the other said ” we have heard so much about Augie since we were born, we feel like we know the place.”

Brian said pretty much the same thing, (that he too would have probably gone to Augie just like his 3 older brothers.

One of the guys said ” the best part is that each year the stories get bigger and better.   At first my uncle stole home, then it was 3rd and home. Now it’s 1st, 2nd , 3rd and home.  I can’t wait to see what it is next year!”
